Repairing fitness equipment can be quite costly. With the cost of both parts and labour sky-rocketing, many people and organisations are looking for ways to avoid expensive repair bills. One way to do this is to have your fitness equipment serviced regularly. Another good tactic is to perform a few simple maintenance procedures yourself. Here’s some information to help you get started with basic treadmill and elliptical servicing that will save money and extend the life of your machines.

Basic Treadmill Maintenance

Once per week, wipe down the surfaces of the machine, such as the side rails, with a clean, soft, damp cloth. This is necessary because if dirt and grit build up, between the deck and belt, for example, such build up will eventually impair the machine’s function and could cause damage. It’s also important to prevent the deck from drying out by using a lubricant approved by the treadmill’s manufacturer. A dry deck will lead to problems with the motor and/or controller. Inspect the area between the deck and the belt every month. Also on a monthly basis, run the empty treadmill and visually inspect the belt for proper alignment. The belt always should be centred on the deck. If it isn’t, stop using the treadmill and refer to the owner’s manual for instructions on adjusting or aligning the belt. Run the machine at full speed monthly, because this will help to keep dirt and debris from accumulating. Finally, remove the hood and vacuum the motor area to remove dirt and dust that might cause a short-circuit in the motor.

Basic Elliptical Trainer Maintenance

Once per week, wipe down the machine with a clean, soft, damp cloth. Check the wheels to be sure nothing has lodged in them that could impair their function. Like treadmills, ellipticals require regular lubrication with a specific type of grease or oil. Manufacturers consider this so important that they often provide a small tube of lubricant with new machines. Once this is used up, you should be able to buy the correct type locally, but be sure to check with the manufacturer and the exact type and brand of lubricant to use. Also, remember that any lubricant will break down over time, so it’s important to reapply it regularly. If the machine squeaks or makes noise when you’re using it, try a spray lubricant on the foot rails, arm handles and other joints. You can grease the attachment bolts as well. Be sure to check all bolts for tightness and tighten any that are loose. If any bolts are worn, you can order replacements from the manufacturer. For any other types of repairs, it’s wise to call a company that specialises in servicing fitness equipment. If the machine is still under warranty, don’t attempt any self-repairs without consulting the manufacturer. Such repairs might void the warranty, unless performed by a factory-authorised technician.

When it comes to fitness equipment servicing, the best policy is to leave all but the most basic maintenance to the professionals.
